A classic spring clamp guitar capo |
Capo is a device which is used on the neck of a stringed (typically fretted) instrument to shorten the playable length of the strings, hence raising the pitch. It is frequently used on guitars, mandolins, and banjos.
capo has been used since a long ago because of its benefits ......
today i will share you the most useful features & benefits of a capo while playing a guitar ....
Mainly we can use capo in various time in various needs..... there is no hard & fast rules of its uses.... it completely depends upon the guitarists or a musician & his/her level of playing that how a capo will be used ..... though some rough ideas & thoughts & theories which are basics & common to those implements .... to grow your skill & experience as a guitarist you should remember this things ... & these things are the capo's unique benefits which are as following :
1) CHANGE OF KEY BECOMES EASIER :
suppose you are playing a song in C major scale in nut position ... everyone knows playing a song in nut position is smoother & easier (probably the easiest position) because in nut there is a lot of open string notes... you pick at ease ... but in advanced level suppose at stage your vocalist is good at high pitch & sings the same song in D major ...
in order to match the vocal you have to reset your notes in D major .... that means you have to play in D major ... at this stage capo comes ..
you can think that there is also a D major scale at nut but in that case there will be some difficulties...
1 you have to change the solo into D major at a sudden which is a lot difficult because a new shapes & figures & notations will have to be remembered in that small time !
2 In greater range shifts suppose from C to E major or F major shifts , if you are thinking for nut position E or F scale then it will not work properly to pick your pitch ... because at nut position these E & F scales are defined lower than the C ... (E major nut starts from 6th string XD).... so it becomes opposite, it will lower your pitch .......
3 Again suppose you have a guitar solo of which first half is played on E major & 2nd half is on G major ( eg. MY HEART WILL GO ON) ......... so is that easy to change key & raise pitch simultaneously & also change the whole solo in awhile every time ?
So forget those & pick up a capo... clamp it at suitable fret .. play at ease ... forget about note changing ... play the same shapes & notes with the capo .. do exactly the same what you do at nut.. copy & paste it at higher fret... it will be easy & fast .... raise your pitch at any instance, slide the capo as your desire ......
use capo for bar & play nut shape ....
you will have to practice & experiment with it
example: chord progression without capo : Bm F# A E
now try to play it with capo ....
you will find a suitable position for capo in 7th fret & now revised progression for capo will be
Em B D A (all these shapes are nut shapes)
check it out by yourself ........
3. COMPOSE FANTASTIC ARPEGGIOS :
By placing the capo at right position ... extract beautiful arpeggios ...... it is seen that arpeggiated chords from a capo sounds clearer & better than the bar chords ...
4. MAKE FINGER STYLE SOLOS USING CAPO :
In finger-style picking you have to pick bass & treble notes at the same time sometime....
sometime you will have to play chords & etc .... just make it easier with a capo ..
this is a advanced level use by the way ... you will have to learn a good experience before doing this...
that's why its more tougher ....I'm not describing it elaborately now ...
SO MAINLY THAT'S THE ALL ABOUT CAPO & ITS MAJOR USES . THOUGH USE CAPO AS YOUR DESIRE .. CONFIGURE THINGS BY YOUR OWN ... AS SOON AS YOU WILL LEARN YOU WILL FIND IT GREAT ... & YOU MAY USE IT IN YOUR WAY ...
